I AM PRESENTLY PUTTING A NEW GM CRATE IN MY DADS 79 EL CAMINO. WE ORDERED ONE OFF THE NET, 1200 BUCKS, AND IT ARRIVED BY 18 WHEELER IN 3 DAYS ($120 FOR SHIPPING). YOU WILL FIND MANY SITE THAT OFFER THIS MOTOR ITS RATED AT 220HP, AND CAME COMPLETE MINUS FUEL PUMP, INTAKE, DISTRO,WATER PUMP. ITS THE BASE LINE GM 350 CRATE, AND I WAS SURPRISED NOT REBUILT, BUT NEW. 1 YEAR/50K MILE WARRANTY. I WAS THINKING, IF I HAVE TO SWAP OUT MY DADS L-48 (A 79 AS WELL), THATS WHATS GOING IN IT AS WELL. FOR 1200, YOU JUST CANT BEAT IT USE YOUR OLD INTAKE/DISTRO JUST THINK, BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN, YOU COULD ADD A HOTTER CAM, INTAKE AND SUCH, AND YOUD HAVE A GREAT NEW MOTOR JUST FYI IP: Logged |

Melvin- In the January 2000 issue, Chevy High Performance magazine did a feature on this motor. They added Chevy Vortec heads, Performer RPM intake, Comp Cams XE-268H-10, roller rockers, 1 3/4" headers and a Holley 750 and turned out 408 HP and 430 ft.-lbs. torque. They didn't give the total cost, but the heads are only about $400 complete, so I'm guessing just a little over $1,000 in addition to the crate motor. Sounds like a lot of bang for the buck! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Melvin, Sounds like a good motor for a ElCamino but a Vette? Does it have four bolt mains? Tex71BB, I guess I will have to get that Chev High Performance magazine again.I dropped it but it is far better than some of the corvette magazines I get. IP: Logged |

COULDNT TELL YOU IF IT HAS 4 BOLT MAINS OR NOT. REGARDLESS, I DONT THINK IT WOULD BE A BAD REPLACEMENT FOR A VETTE REGARDLESS. LOOK AT MY 427 L-36 DOES IT HAVE 4 BOLT MAINS?, NOPE IP: Logged |

It has 4-bolt mains. The 220hp rating is very conservative. I think CHP found 250hp at the flywheel. Definitely the BEST NEW 350 for the dollar for any 1986-earlier Chevy. Responds very favorably, as found in CHP to the standard engine hop-ups. I wish I had gone this route when I rebuilt but wanted to keep my 'numbers matching' (even though the car isn't likely to ever wander near Bloomington or elsewhere for judging). ------------------ My Homepage (thanks forum!!!) http://www.corvetteforum.net/c3/tedh/ IP: Logged |

I think this is the one that I replaced my blown crossfire with. It is known as the LM1. Ostensibly, it is rated at 250hp. This is with open headers, Qjet. Dyno 2000 with my specs (i.e., as close to a crossfire manifold as I can get) gives me 246hp at 4500 rpm and 338tq at 3000 rpm. I have port matched my intake so I don't think I loose much if anything with the dual tbi's. Whether or not that is right, I can tell you that the car is much, much faster than a stock motor crossfire. It is a 4 bolt main. Head chamber is 70cc rather than the 72cc of the original motor (whoopee!). Have played with a cam change and can get 305hp and 383tq at rpms of above. Nice motor for the price. I would look into a Performer pkg on it or something like that. I dont know that the Vortecs will give you hood clearance. I checked into putting those on mine. Trick flows are cheaper than Edelbrocks though about 800 IP: Logged |

I've found that Scoggin-Dickey in Lubbock Texas has very agreeable prices and a very helpful engine department: http://www.sdpc2000.com A few particulars from SDPC for this engine:

This is the old Targetmaster motor that came out in the late 70's. I bought the first one for $800 and the second one for $1,100.00 from local Chevy dealers. I'm still running it in my 69. It has good performance reliability, runs on 89 octane without a problem. I installed a double roller chain before installing it. I plan on putting in a 268 cam and performer intake with 1-5/8" headers. I'm not sure what this run for HP but I'm guessing 325, maybe more. Gary ------------------ IP: Logged |

I bought this engine for my vette after reading the articles in CHP. If anyone is interested, there is a picture of it on my web page. So far I have swapped out the cam and ported the heads. Would love some aluminum heads but decided to put that money into the side exhaust first. Maybe next year??? Got mine from Scoggin Dickey (via internet) for $1289. Anyone in the market for a rebuildable '79 L-48? ------------------ [This message has been edited by Ed-79 (edited 12-20-2000).] IP: Logged |
